               Project 1: Module Proposal

Lynette Markey

Post University

Summary of Course

Virtual reality has been a new form of entertainment over the past several years and currently being introduced into classrooms.  The main question is how this will fit into the current educational system and is it cost effective. This class will provide ways to explain how virtual reality works, the cost, and how current educators can use it to benefit student recall of information.  The main audience to utilize this class will be the higher education area.

Mod 1 will begin with introductions to other students.  The main learning objective will be full of information explaining what virtual reality is and how to utilize it in the educational trends of the future.  There will be an introduction to the Oculus headset and the cost per unit.  Activities are to include reading and videos which will require the internet web.  There will be a discussion board question in reference to the reading specifically about how schools will pay for the new technology and in order to asses student learning, there will be a quiz to verify understanding of what virtual reality is.

Mod 2 is about Virtual reality learning environment or VRLE.  The objective of this mod is to review the two sets of readings which are necessary to introduce the Pros and Cons of virtual reality into learning.  There will be a discussion as to the different uses which will be caused to predict how virtual reality can be used to convert information to long term knowledge.  The assessment tool for this mod will be a Blog – used to take a pro or con side of the introduction of VR into schools.  The purpose of the Blog is to see if students understand that not everyone is a candidate for virtual reality use and having known this piece of information, how does one address the problem to include all students.

Mod 3 will focus on what an educator may need to know before teaching a class which includes virtual reality.  There will be two readings and one video to give an overview of some ideas and how the system has been used to date to be followed by a discussion board question.  To see if an educator understands how the unit will work it will be necessary to take a virtual field trip which would include the use of a personal Oculus headset.  The Oculus will be used as the assessment tool for the mod so the student can experiment with the actual program to understand exactly what a person will experience with questions to answer about what was seen.

The rational for this design choice is that virtual reality has already been experimented with when it is used in the medical field and there are talks about trying to introduce it into the higher education areas.  The real question is whether virtual reality is considered to be blended learning since there is face to face within the virtual world or is this considered online learning.

According to Forbes Magazine Virtual Reality training is being used in several fields from store robbery simulations to how to treat guests in a hotel as well as in the medical fields. (Meister, 2020) If this is the new and upcoming trend, then it is necessary for Universities to integrate this field of study into courses today.
